Strength: The Heart is Mightier than the Mind
By C. Sean Clancy
How do we change the course of our health, our career, our life, of our very spirit? Do you subscribe to the Big Bang Theory or are you a modern day Michaelangelo?
Wind, water, and glaciers shaped and continue to shape our physical environment. They use persistence to move seemingly immovable objects. Persistence…erosion…the sculpter’s hand and chisel. These are forces that can change the world. Can you guess what force can change you (and your world)?
We’ve all heard the clichés: “You are what you eat”. “You are what you think”. “You are what you repeatedly do”. I would like to add, “You are what your feel in your heart”.
How do we change our environment…can we light a fuse and blow away the parts that we don’t like? I submit to you that the focus or sharp chisel of life is your tool of choice. Oh and it does require that you have a vision. The great British singer, Joe Jackson wrote a song entitled “You can’t get what you want, ‘til you know what you want”…wordy yes…to the point…yes again. Dr. Stephen Covey implores us to “Begin with the end in mind” and THEN “Put first things first” in his best selling book; The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People .
We all know that the heart is a muscle…it pumps our life blood…we all know that a heart can break or at least feel like it is broken. Can we train our heart to be strong? Not just physically but emotionally or spiritually…you bet we can. We do this by exercising it. By asking it what is really important to us and leading with our heart and not our head. Courage is bolstered by a strong heart and the feeling of confidence that being true to our heart provides.
Great leaders and great athletes are said to have big hearts or hearts of fire. Humans who excel at whatever they do have one thing in common…they do what they do very well and they do it CONSISTENTLY. Where does the consistency come from? Dare I say from the discipline to focus and stay on track. And where does the discipline come from? From a place of strength…your strength…inside of you…below the neck.
The vision, the path, and the answers that you are searching for are all inside of you just as the Grand Canyon was once inside of the earth. The strength of the wind and water consistently applied; carved what we see today. The moral is that we must begin and commit to stay at the task of uncovering our desired life until we find it. We must let our heart drive and we must have the courage and strength to hold on.
